By all appearances, it was a beautiful day. The morning clouds had burned off to expose a bright, blue sky. The water levels were flowing well. Even the winter chill in the air gave way to the warmth of the sun, requiring the removal of an outer layer.

Three hours on the water. Countless casts. Flies selected, second guessed, then replaced. But no fish. Not even a sign of fish. No flashes, no chases, none spooked by awkward footsteps.
After eating a pack of snack crackers and taking a swig from a colorful, multi-stickered water bottle, I knew it was time to cut it short and call it a day. It happens sometimes, and it’s okay.
You probably should have been using a nymph. 🙂
