Pizza Nostalgia

This post has nothing to do with fishing. But, when you encounter something remarkable, something that fills a void in your life that you didn’t know was missing since the late 1980s… well, you feel compelled to write about it.

My wife & I found ourselves in western North Carolina this Labor Day weekend. One of the stops we made in our travels was Bryson City. Now, there are many wonderful small, local eateries to enjoy along the main drag above the Tuckaseegee River, but we chose to stop at a chain. A “Pizza Hut Classic” to be exact.

And to our delight, a Pizza Hut Classic is exactly that, a restaurant modeled just like one from the 1980s, complete with red & white checkered tablecloths, the stained glass lamps, brick walls, salad/buffet bar, and red plastic cups (although all the cups were being washed post lunch-rush when we went in, so we had paper). Our waitress was even wearing a retro “Book It!” t-shirt.

Honestly, the only things missing were the jukebox and the Ms. Pac Man or Galaga machine by the door.

As for the pizza, we shared a pan pizza with pepperoni and it was quite a nostalgic experience.

In this age of most Pizza Huts being takeout locations, I don’t exactly remember the last time I had a Pizza Hut pizza served tableside in the pan, but I might as well have been 10 years old again.

Was it the best pizza I ever had? Certainly not, but it tastes like I remembered it, and that’s all that matters. This is peak “fine dining” for the elementary schooler that still lives inside this forty-something.
