In yesterday’s post I alluded to some new-to-me flies I’m adding to my fly boxes. They’re a bit in shambles following the summer, so a bit of rehab is necessary if I’m going to head north in a few weeks. The following two beadhead soft hackle patterns were recently bought, not tied myself, and I’m excited to give them a go…
Brent’s Warbird

This striking pattern came recommended from my friend Dave Noll after fishing with him in Minnesota earlier this year. He outfished me that day. And while anybody who has ever fished with me will note that’s not a difficult accomplishment, I could still tell he knows his stuff.
Pettirosso Nymph

This is a soft hackle hare’s ear nymph on a jig hook. With the colder weather ahead, I’m thinking I’ll need to go deeper than usual to find the fish. This tungsten baddie should work just fine. Especially as an anchor fly. Plus, it’s an Italian recipe… Mangia!
Both of these fly patterns were purchased at DRAGONtail Tenkara, but they aren’t necessarily “tenkara” flies. They have a great assortment of flies and fly tying supplies over there. If you’re not familiar, check ’em out!

I assume you are heading to the Smokies. Catch a few for me. I have been busy for some time overseeing renovations on Jason’s house in Birmingham, which has taken up most of my time for fall fishing. I hope to make a few trips on Smith Lake before I hang the fly rod up for the winter. Thanks for sharing
I’ll try my best. Hope you get out at least a few more times this year!
I’m really liking that soft hackle nymph.
I’ve caught some nice trout with the pettirosso. I usually tie it with hare’s ear vicuna dubbing from Dragontail, a red wire rib, and a very flashy red collar.
