Heading into each year, I have a loose idea in my head of where I’d like to fish. These options can range anywhere between quick, weekend escapes within driving distance… to extended trips requiring air travel, hotels, or camping. Sometimes that could even mean travel abroad, although I haven’t left the country since prior to the pandemic, and perhaps with all the things going on in Washington, this might not be the best year to work it into my plans.
So that considered, last night I booked tickets to Minneapolis to fish the Minnesota and Wisconsin Driftless at the end of May, and then followed it up organizing a trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire for the end of June. OMG, I can’t wait!

Neither locations are “new” fishing grounds for me, but they’re both stellar in their own way. What they have in common is that they’re also extremely “trouty” fisheries that have endless options in which to wet a line, most of which I haven’t tested my luck in yet.

I was fortunate to score some good deals on airfare, so it was a no brainer to seal the deal now. Especially because who knows what anything is going to look like financially later this year.
(I try not to talk politics here, and I don’t intend on starting now, but working in retail buying as a profession, the “on again, off again” tariff situation is a bit scary. I had hoped to head West at the end of the Summer or early Fall, somewhere like Idaho, Wyoming, or even Colorado, but it may just not be in the cards if prices on everything shoot up.)
Anyway, on a brighter note… buttery Wisconsin browns, speckled New Hampshire brookies, and of course obligatory stocked rainbows, here I come! The countdown starts now!
