The Feast of the Seven Fishes

As you probably figured out by all the vowels in my last name, I’m Italian by heritage. Or at least half (the other half is German). But when it came to the Christmas holiday, nobody did it bigger than my grandparents (and later my aunt) on my Dad’s side of the family. Christmas Eve was a day long event of family, food, and fun, but let’s not kid ourselves, it was mostly food.

Cheeses, pasta in various forms, sweets, you name it. The entire dining room table was filled up with plates and trays and crock pots and any sort of vessel that could hold antipasto, cookies, crusty bread, lasagna, or whatever. It was a celebration of food.

In honor of the Italian American tradition, I’m going to share another one with you this Christmas Eve, The Feast of the Seven Fishes. It’s an Italian American celebration of Christmas Eve with dishes of fish and other seafood. (It’s also the backdrop of one of the best episodes of television maybe ever.) Anyway, since I can’t feed you fish, I’m going to share my seven favorite fish photos from 2024. Mangia Mangia!

The Feast of the Seven Fishes - Troutrageous - Bluegill
First fish of 2024, an unremarkable Florida retention pond bluegill
Smallest, and first trout of the year. Chasing rainbows outside of Helen, Georgia
The Feast of the Seven Fishes - Troutrageous - Rainbow Trout
Football shaped rainbow from outside Cherokee, North Carolina
The Feast of the Seven Fishes - Troutrageous - Brook Trout
Stellar wild brookie in the White Mountains of New Hampshire
Battle-scarred stocked rainbow, also New Hampshire
The Feast of the Seven Fishes - Troutrageous - Brown Trout
Brown trout, for the sake of including one, also New Hampshire.
The Feast of the Seven Fishes - Troutrageous - Largemouth Bass
Top water popper largemouth bass, Florida retention pond

Now, I didn’t go fishing as much as I normally do in 2024. No Driftless, no Pennsylvania, no Colorado. Only one trip to the Smokies. New Hampshire was incredible; believe me, I’m not complaining. So this list was actually quite a bit harder than I thought it was going to be. But anyway, there’s the Christmas Eve Feast of the Seven Fishes. Already looking forward to next year!
