Is there anything in fly fishing better than an aggressive topwater strike?
Don’t answer that question if you disagree, because you’d be wrong.
I followed up on my Saturday sojourn with a Sunday walk back to the scene of the crime. Still muggy, still humid, even a bit drizzly, but this time with the Clearwooder in hand.

I won’t pretend that it was a great session. But I made good on catching “A Fish of Any Kind.” And the way it took the fly was all the better.
It had been a while since I fished my 5-weight. So it took a bit for the casting form to snap back into shape, but eventually I got the line and little black popper going where I wanted it to go.

Strip, strip, strip… I love the wake that a Boogle Bug makes. This bass did too, as it exploded to the surface like a ‘roided up middle linebacker destroying an undersized slot receiver coming hot across the middle.
A minute or so later it was to hand, and then quickly released. A little larger than the typical microbass™ I tend to catch. Nice size noggin, just needs a little more time for its body to catch up.
And certainly nice to feel the bend of a rod again.
Postscript: I rarely (never?) listen to anything while fishing. But since the water I visited required about a 20 minute walk, I popped the earbuds in and streamed this podcast. Decided to let it run while fishing. A nice change for this suburban pond session.
Revisit this place in late October, which is when the top action will be even more explosive—-glad you made a connection—congrats!!
