Fly Fishing Podcast Inner Workings

No. I do not intend on creating a Troutrageous! podcast. Although if I ever did, it would probably be the worst fever dream ever conceived…

Something like this… probably…

I currently have a monthly podcast over at Tenkara Angler, where a few fixed line friends & I kind of chat about miscellaneous stuff and mix in an interview or some storytelling here and there. It’s far from professional, but its got a nice little following within our community, and I’d love it if you’d check it out if you have interest in that sort of stuff. But that’s just a shameless plug and not really the subject of this article.

The “inner workings” I’m actually referencing are contained in a recent episode of April Vokey’s Anchored podcast that I listened to while taking my morning walk around the neighborhood yesterday. Her guest was Dave Stewart. And I’m not talking about the flame throwing ace of the 1990’s Oakland Athletics. (Although that would have been equally as awesome).

Instead, I’m referencing Dave Stewart, host of the Wet Fly Swing podcast, one that for as “fishy” as I consider myself, had no idea existed, but is actually one of the most popular and prolific fly fishing podcasts out there today. Perhaps the name just got me thinking of spey rods, steelhead, and salmon and I placed some sort of mental block.

Anyway, what I found the most interesting was the core conversation that included some of the behind the scenes activities that take place to keep Dave’s podcast going strong and moving forward, a pod he publishes a whopping three times a week!

It was very encouraging to listen to both Dave and April speak about their successes, failures, and differing approaches to podcasting, including topics such as integrity, scale, equipment, monetization, and cancel culture.

If you enjoy listening to podcasts, or perhaps want to start (or grow) one of your own, I highly recommend lending an ear. It’s good stuff!
